Finding the Right Transparency

The public and government agencies are demanding nonprofits to be transparent. But concerns about having a realistic picture of internal operations, where money is going, and the effectiveness of the programs are countered by concerns of overburdened staff, increased administrative costs, and an invitation to singled-out and damaging criticism. Transparency is not a matter of two extremes – of all or nothing – and as a result, many nonprofits continue to struggle in addressing these concerns. read more

A Dicey Economy & the Holiday Push

There are a couple of things fundraisers need to be thinking about right now. The economy is still faltering with some predicting a double dip recession or just a continuation of the old one. Plus, the end-of-year fundraising season is coming up, which, for many organizations, is more of a do or die season than a holiday one. read more

Integrating Your Mission with Automated Fundraising

Earlier this year we blogged about a great whitepaper written by Nell Edgington of Social Velocity that had some great ideas for restructuring the way the nonprofit sector is funded. We discussed the importance of properly aligned mission, core competencies and fundraising efforts. The ultimate mission of your organization should be supported by your core competencies and thereby helping you generate money. If you are asking for support, which all nonprofits do you should have a clear plan in place, as well as some great ways to communicate to your donors regarding the steps you’re taking to impact the community or cause you serve. This is likely to turn “donors” into “investors”. When those that give see a positive and quantifiable result – they are likely to get excited and stay involved over the long term. read more

Getting the Most out of your Data

If you’re not doing so already, you should be looking for ways in which you can get more from your data. You should be able to go beyond the “black and white” information and start thinking visually. Both Sage 100 Fund Accounting and AccuFund have built in data intelligence capabilities which can help you analyze your data in more detail. For example, are you able to determine if the grant that pays for 5% of your overhead is cost effective? What if it costs you more than 25% to run and you don’t know it? read more

What is “Cloud Computing”?

Cloud Computing, also referred to as Software as-a-Service can be simply defined as services and applications that are hosted and accessed via the internet, rather than on an onsite server and hardware. This technology has been around for a while, but over the last year has been gaining more and more traction in the business community and is starting to emerge as an option for nonprofits as well. read more

Automating Human Resource Management

For many nonprofits keeping labor costs down and productivity up is a challenge. Manual or semi-automated workforce management processes make that challenge even more daunting. Organizations that still have disconnected processes, payroll process gaps, manual check cutting, costly workarounds and inaccurate or late payroll are examples of manual processes that need to be addressed in order to reduce costs and improve workforce efficiency. Plus manual processes take valuable time that could be spent on contributing to the cause. read more
